Africa through another lens.
Filamu (“film” in Swahili) is a 360° docu-fiction shot in Tanzania. Two African-Americans, invited to sit on a festival jury, watch immersive footage of Tanzanian landscapes and daily life, and wonder why they were chosen to judge this piece. As the images unfold around them, their commentary turns into a lively, humorous debate about Africa, identity and their own origins.
As writer, director and producer, I wanted to show Africa through another lens than its wildlife or poverty, and to give a voice to African-Americans in a light tone. The result is a journey that is visually African but vocally American, full of irony, sincere debate and humor.
After years of producing 360° content with my company Clap & Zap, Filamu was my first original 360° film as a director. It went on to win awards and be selected at international VR festivals, and was later showcased in VR on the VRROOM platform.
